BFGoodrich Tires Persevere Through Rain-Soaked SCORE Baja 1000

Despite challenging conditions, BFGoodrich Tires take home 14 class wins

ENSENADA, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO, NOV. 26, 2019 — The 52nd SCORE Baja 1000 was marked by heavy rains just days before the race, a 24-hour delay and course conditions tougher than any in recent memory. Despite it all, racers from an array of different classes proved their toughness, and BFGoodrich® Tires were able to shine through the mud.

The sloppy course conditions were the result of rare, major rainfall in Baja California. The weather provided a challenge that BFGoodrich and its world-class racers stepped up to. Of the top 10 overall 4-wheel finishers, nine were racing on BFGoodrich. For the Trophy Truck class, 11 of the top 12 finishers raced on BFGoodrich.

The brand took home 14 class wins, including:

  • Trophy Truck Spec – BFGoodrich saw a podium sweep of the Trophy Truck Spec class, with Austin “AJ” Jones and Brock Heger taking the top spot. Sara Price, also a BFGoodrich racer, finished second in the Trophy Truck Spec class on 40-inch BFGoodrich® Baja T/A® KR3 tires. Price did the entire race without alternating drivers, referred to as completing a race “IronWoman” style. With this finish, Price took the points for a season title in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
  • Class 2 – One of the headliners of this year’s Baja 1000 was the reimagining of the “Baja Boot.” The original Boot was raced in Baja by Steve McQueen and other desert racing pioneers in the 1960s. Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (SCG) created the 21st century interpretation of the iconic Boot for this year’s race. SCG selected 37-inch BFGoodrich® Baja T/A KR2® tires for the race. The Baja Boot was driven by Darren Skilton, Viry Felix, John Krellwitz, Jono Vizcardo, Pat Smith and Mike Rossey.
  • Class 1 – NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan and short-course champion RJ Anderson won Class 1 on 40-inch BFGoodrich® Baja T/A® KR3 tires.
  • Trophy Truck Legends – Rolf Helland, Rick Johnson
  • Class 10 – Chase Warren, Martin Richardson, Adam Pfankuch, Richard Kern
  • Class 7 – Mike Shaffer, Adam Aresenault, Eric Strom, John Bowers, Rowan Trollope
  • Class 5 – Greg Sullivan, Miguel Pabloff, Russ Parker, Jesus Marquez
  • Class 7SX – Gerardo Novelo, James Murphy, Jose Castro, Jesus Castro
  • Class ½ 1600 – Jose David Ruvalcaba, Leonel Ruvalcaba, Esteban Cruz, Rogelio Panda, Alberto Cruz
  • Class 5-1600 – Ruben Garcia, Guy Savedra, Steven Fuentes, Mark Winston, Andrew Farris
  • Class 11 – Dennis Hollenbeck, Armando Salazar, Luis Vasquez, Wes Smith, Will Watson, Diego Robles
  • Baja Challenge – Lance Clifford, Brian Finch, Travis Daines, Jonathan Jewel, Kelly Lund, Mike “Jr” Johnson, Jay Jukupca
  • Class 3 – Donald Moss, Ken Moss, Dave Grundman

This year’s race was noted as one that brought drivers from a variety of other motorsports disciplines, and many found success on BFGoodrich Tires. In addition to several class winners mentioned previously, Dakar Rally champions Toby Price and Nasser Al-Attiyah finished second overall in the Trophy Truck Class on 40-inch BFGoodrich® Baja T/A® KR3 tires.

“BFGoodrich saw 14 class wins in this year’s Baja 1000. We also saw iconic vehicles such as the Baja Boot and the Ford Bronco R taking a shot at the grueling race,” said Peter Calhoun, BFGoodrich motorsports manager. “I’m proud that they choose BFGoodrich Tires. We’ve been continually perfecting our tires to perform in this race for more than four decades and we like seeing that technology manifest on the podium.”
